The Derbyshire Federation of Women's Institutes had its usual tent at the show.

The program tells me that "The WI has had a presence at Bakewell Show for more than half a century and its marquee is always a popular attraction. One of the big draws must be the cakes and refreshments - everything prepared by the members to the highest possible standards. Sylvia knows just how high those standards are: on the one occasion she attempted to join the sandwich-making team, she received a firm reprimand for failing to butter her bread to the edge of the slice!

"Another popular element of the WI tent is the competitive classes: craft and cookery contests open ot members and non-members alike. This year's theme will be British Traditions, and competition will be tough; entrants know what it means to be given the WI experts' stamp of approval."

Yes, it is the norm here for sandwiches to have buttered bread. I think it's in lieu of other condiments most of the time (ie mayo, ketchup, etc), which they seem not to go for so much. If you come to visit, make sure to tell any restaurant/etc to not butter your bread when ordering a sandwich (unless you like it that way you weirdo).
